Fletcher Mamas: Pilates, Pregnancy, and the Strength of Community

At Fletcher Pilates, movement is understood as a lifelong practice, one that supports the body through many stages of life. Recently, our faculty experienced a meaningful moment that beautifully reflected this idea.

In the same year, nine members of the Fletcher Pilates faculty were either pregnant or had recently welcomed new babies. What began as casual conversations among colleagues quickly grew into a supportive network now affectionately known as the “Fletcher Mamas.”

Their shared experiences sparked thoughtful dialogue about pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and what it means to navigate motherhood while continuing to teach and practice Pilates.

Pilates During Pregnancy and Early Motherhood

Pilates offers meaningful support for the body during pregnancy and postpartum recovery. Breath awareness, spinal mobility, and balanced muscular engagement help maintain strength, stability, and coordination as the body changes.

For the Fletcher Mamas, these principles became deeply personal. As movement educators, they relied on Pilates to stay connected to their bodies throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the early stages of recovery.

Their experiences reinforced something many Pilates teachers understand: mindful movement and breath can provide powerful support during times of physical transformation.

Pilates Teachers Navigating Pregnancy and Postpartum Recovery

Pregnancy creates unique challenges for Pilates teachers. Teaching schedules, studio responsibilities, and client relationships often continue while the body undergoes significant change.

The Fletcher Mamas shared insights about how their movement education supported them during pregnancy and helped guide their return to teaching after birth. They also spoke openly about the realities of balancing professional responsibilities with caring for a newborn.

These conversations offer a rare perspective on how experienced movement educators approach pregnancy and postpartum recovery within their own bodies.

A Global Pilates Community Supporting Mothers

The Fletcher Mamas initiative also highlights the strength of the Fletcher Pilates community. Faculty members from across the United States, Canada, and the Middle East contributed their perspectives, creating a meaningful exchange of experiences.

Many Pilates teachers work independently or operate small studios, which can make pregnancy and early motherhood feel isolating. The Fletcher Mamas created space for connection, shared understanding, and mutual support during this important life transition.

The story of the Fletcher Mamas appears in Pilates Style Magazine, where Fletcher Pilates Founder and Director Kyria Sabin and Fletcher Pilates Matwork Program Director Ilana Giardina explore these conversations in greater depth.
